A core portion of Santa Carolina R&D projects is recovery of old grape varietals and vineyards. Accordingly and thanks to the never-relenting efforts of our winemaking team and the support of our advisors, we have made a remarkable discovery. A grape variety until now absent from most vineyards around the world and only featured by European collections was found in our Chacra Centenario in Totihue: Plant de Chaudefonds, a red variety of which only three plants existed in the entire world, all of them in France.
The discovery belongs to the renowned French ampelographer Jean-Michel Boursiquot, who analyzed a variety that at that moment had yet to be identified. This finding evidences the criticality of this recovery project, not only for Santa Carolina, but for global winemaking.
The newly discovered variety is being reproduced by our Bloque Herencia team, so that further research can be carried out to evaluate its potential and possible vinification in a few years.
